The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness….†This declaration called for a national independence, but not for all people. Which people were included in this original declaration and which people were excluded? What is the difference between national independence and personal independence and how does that play a role in our society today? Are the same groups that were excluded at the time of the declaration included today? Are there new groups that are now excluded? If so, how can we include them in today’s society?
