• From the e-Activity, review the list of available certificates on the home page of the International Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Institute. Select one of the certificates and state why you would pursue this certificate to improve your understanding of the export / import profession.

I would choose the 6-SIGMA certification. 6-SIGMA is about continuous process improvement and finding the most efficient method. I am a yellow belt and am currently working on my green belt certification. I completed the course for my green belt certification and now must participate in one event and run a second event under the supervision of a black belt to receive my certification. The reason I am currently pursuing this certification is because many processes throughout the Navy could benefit from the 6-SIGMA methodology. I believe that getting this certification would help improve understanding of the export/import profession because it would make the importer/exporter follow a process from start to finish and identify areas of concern to take for action. 

• Form the same review; recommend another certificate program that should be added (one that does not currently exist). Explain your rationale.   

I would create a certified CBP liaison program. The course description would include familiarization with U.S. Customs and Boarder Patrol policies, rules, and regulations. Upon certification the importer would be qualified in the ability to communicate with account managers to represent the best interests of the business.

As you explore the certificates, also consider which is likely to be more effective: training provided by the U.S. government or programs offered by private organizations, colleges, and universities?

In viewing the website IPSCMI certificate programs all the certifications were interesting, however the one certification that I believe to be of critical importance is the E-procurement certification. This certification entails learning what e-procurement is as well as what is e-commerce is. In addition participants are taught how integrate e-procurement with strategic management. Procurement is a critical part of supply chain management; users should ensure that costs are compatible with needs as well as quantity and quality.

In recommending a certificate program that could be implemented into the IPSCMI program, a certification of EEI instructions, and maybe drawback certification could be implemented to ensure that companies are well versed as well as competent in these tasks.
