#1 Chapter 86

Violence against women is a major public health and human rights concern, with intimate partner violence and sexual violence among the most pervasive forms of violence against women. Research, initially from North America and Europe, but increasingly from other regions, has demonstrated the high prevalence of violence against women globally and its adverse physical and mental health outcomes, in both the short and long term. Health-care providers frequently, and often unknowingly, come into contact with women affected by violence, since abused women make extensive use of health-care resources. Health-care providers are in a unique position to create a safe and confidential environment for facilitating disclosure of violence, while offering appropriate support and referral to other resources and services.

IV Essential: trains nurses to integrate and to translate the scholarship into practice based on their integrative skills between practice and evidence. They are professional regulators of policies that impact the health of patients and how professional practices respond to these policies about care and attention. So, public health centers and health-care providers should focus on both women and their spouses in order to participate in both national and community level of educational and promotional intervention programs. Without their participation, the likelihood of success in decreasing SIPV against women would be low.

CH 87: Human Trafficking: The Need for Nursing Advocacy.

Human trafficking is an immediate public health concern that transcends all genders, social classes, races, and demographics; and is taking place in schools, communities, and neighborhoods.

This chapter focuses on the nursing advocacy in order to help stop human trafficking. Trafficking not only violates human rights and cause social problems, but also influence badly the health of the person who is trafficked, who can experience psychologic trauma, infectious diseases, drug addition, unwanted pregnancy, malnutrition, and many others physical problems. The first step in stopping trafficking is identifying the victim, and nurses are critical not only to identify trafficked persons, but also to promote physical, mental, and cognitive health; develop and implement a victim-centered approach; and implement research to inform best practices globally.

Also in this chapter I could read about the policy in the workplace that helps have an action plan and protocol to follow when a victim of trafficking is identified. Nurses should know about these policies in their workplace in order to provide proper care, protect from harm, and direct social and legal services to the trafficked person.

Nurses associations has a big role in this theme. In 2008, 2010 and 2016 the American Nurses Association highlighted human trafficking as a public health and human right crisis with the aim to ensure nurses have skill sets properly to identify and refer victims of human trafficking and to advocate and support protection and prosecution legislation. In 2017, the Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health adopted policy recommending safety planning with community partnerships and developing evidence-based interventions.

Nurses can advocate in many different ways. For example, by the establishment of human trafficking protocols and screening techniques on every admission to health care facility; also by placing forensic nurses, acute care nurses and community nurses on community programs responding to human trafficking and organizations supporting the work of the inter professional team committed to elimination of human trafficking.

The Essential VIII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving Health I think is the essential most relates to this chapter. It is important that master prepared nurses acquire skills and knowledge that allow them to recognize human trafficking victims and implement clinical prevention and health activities to improve the health status of the population regardless cultural and ethnic identity, socio-economic condition, emotional and spiritual needs.

I think that nurses can make the difference in victims that suffer from human trafficking by offering care, support, and advocacy, and can have an impact in preventing it.
