Samira Shams Martinez Leadership in Sports
“Leadership is a series of behaviors rather than a role for heroes.” -Margaret Wheatley Some people are natural born leaders, and some develop the skills and qualities to become one. There are different types of leaders and different ways to lead. Being an excellent leader is not defined by how much money you have but defined by how you interact with people and how you treat them.
I personally like the Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment model when it comes to leadership. Being mindful is about being aware of your surroundings. It is about learning to accept what you cannot change and adapt. Mindfulness is also to not only be aware of your surroundings, but to learn how to change what you can control. If you cannot, then learning how to cope with it so it may bring you peace. When you are at peace, you can see and/or think clearly. When you can see and/or think clearly, then you can be at your best. Then, when you are at your best, you can lead! In order to lead others to the right path, you must be on the right path yourself.
I feel that the Charismatic Leadership is the most effective for me. This style of leadership is inspiring. “Rather than encouraging behaviors through strict instructions, these leaders use eloquent communication and persuasion to unite a team around a cause (Boogaard, 2020).â€
I think that the Autocratic Leadership is the least helpful. The reason being this type of leadership is very bossy and ineffective. It makes the people “feel ignored, restricted, and—in the absolute worst of cases—even abused (Boogaard, 2020).†This type of leader always has to have it their way.
I have been told by one of my ex-employers, from when I was in my early twenties, that he never has to worry about me because no matter where I go, I will always be a leader. That really inspired me to always give it my all and be confident. I would most like to be the Charismatic leader. I like to motivate and inspire people. To pick them up and give them the same inspiration my ex-employer gave
Chelladurai’s model of leadership is the best in my opinion. This model does not just focus on one aspect of personality that makes a leader but it covers the three important ones. The model focuses on the three leader behaviors which are prescribed, preferred and actual. Each different behavior is what is preferred when it comes to making a leader and what can help then achieve success at being a leader. No one has the same personality on a team, so being a leader you must take that into consideration. This model deals with how information is being communicated to everyone, if a coach is hostile the team is not going to form a bond and they may be resistant to change. This is why you must control how you speak to your followers because this is what is going to make a great leader. The style of leadership that has been most effective for myself is being open and honest with any teammates. I think the more transparent you are about situations that may arise the easier it is to come up with a solution in the end. I think trying to hard to fit into what a perfect leader should be is what is going to make you least successful because you will be like a robot. People want genuine feelings and support not a paper perfect leader that is not being authentic. The type of leader I want to be is one that has open communication, so I would never shoot down anyones idea because I want the whole team to feel heard. This is what is important when it comes to being successful is never to look at yourself like you are better than those around you because you were once in their s
