Writing a Brief Draft

At this point in the course, you have developed a focal question, reviewed articles related to your topic, and have designed an outline of your final paper. Using all of that information, begin the writing process now. Effective writers create a draft of their paper and revise that draft one or more times before producing a final paper. Your draft-writing process begins with this assignment and continues in Module 4. In Module 5, you will submit your final draft of this paper.

This assignment requires you to write a draft of the first few pages of your final paper, using current APA standards for editorial style, expression of ideas, and formatting of the text, headings, citations, and references. 

The following components, each in current APA style, must be included:

  1. Title page
  2. Running head with page numbers
  3. 2-3 pages of the body of the paper. Be sure to:
    1. Articulate a research question which is specific, researchable, and important to the field. This should be the same focal question you submitted in Module 2.
    2. Provide an introduction to your paper, introducing your topic and providing an overview of the main points you will discuss in further detail in the final paper.
    3. Review at least 3 academic references. These should be academic references taken from the list of 10 references you submitted inModule 2. Your review of each source should include the following:
      1. The main topic
      2. The focus or thesis of the journal article
      3. The argument the author is making and its relevance to your focal question
      4. The type of article—published, original research, meta-analysis, or reflection piece
      5. The key findings of the study
      6. Your opinion about the merits of the study, including future points of interest or research
      7. Analysis of how the information/research findings in each article confirm or contradict the findings in the other articles you have chosen.

Civil Disobedience

These discussion boards have been designed to explore controversial topics. Often these debates have the potential to become heated.  In the act of creating ideas, heat can be a good thing, but not at the expense of hurt feelings or frustration.  Remember that any argument asks that we change something about ourselves.  If we are asking our readers to change, we need to be civil about it. Likewise, when we are challenged by others with a different opinion, we need to keep an open mind. Remember, we are not changing the world here, only examining it. 

Some important rules to follow: 

  1. You may not attack other people or their ideas in this course.  To do so may result in failure of the assignment. You may, however, disagree with the ideas of others, but do so in a constructive manner. (e.g. “I don’t agree with your post.  I think instead that . . . ” NOT “That’s a dumb way of looking at this.”  Debate in academia is important, but let’s all be adults here. 
  2. Ask open-ended questions (e. g. “What if we thought about things this way?”), and avoid making statements meant to be absolute or closed-ended questions (“There is no other way to think about this,” or “Do you agree with me?”).
  3. Remember to consider the lessons we’ve worked on throughout the rest of the class.  Rather than simply reacting to the readings and the responses of your classmates, think about the arguments being made. Really consider the effectiveness of these arguments.

In his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (1963), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights activist, claims that “one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws” (King, Jr., 1963, p. 5). These sentiments have been shared by some of the most recognizable names throughout history, including America’s forefathers, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, and so on. Dr. King, as well as other from our list, were practicing civil disobedience.

Civil disobedience does not advocate a lawless society. Civil ddisobedience is not the same as someone simply breaking the law.  Civil disobedience is an organized process of law breaking that follows very strict guidelines:

  • Conscientiousness generally aimed at creating or restoring a certain freedom or liberty for all members of that society,
  • communication with the governing body,
  • publicity,
  • and non-violence. 

Practitioners of civil disobedience. more often than not, take aim at laws considered to be unjust.  

  1. How do we choose which laws are just and which ones are not?
  2. What laws do you see that seem to fit the model of what King would call unjust? 

King goes on to explain that those who are “more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice” were the real enemy of his movement toward civil rights (p. 7).  To do nothing, King implies, is to err on the side of the status quo. Think of some unjust things you have witnessed, yet failed to act on. 

  1. Had you acted on it alone, would your involvement have changed anything?
  2. What if we all reacted too swiftly and jointly to matters of injustice?
  3. How does the act of exercising of our first amendment rights, especially when we work together, help to shape the world we live in? 
  4. How did the Occupy Wall Street Movement (OWS) use civil disobedience to further its cause?
  5. Considering the outcomes associated with the OWS Movement, could we claim that the days of effective civil disobedience are over?

  1. Introduction – “What’s the problem?” Students will write a brief summation of the issue and how it impacts families. Scope of the problem – “How big is the problem?” Students will use the resources provided and relevant outside research to describe the scope and impact of the issue on families (include statistics/number of people impacted). Particular attention will be paid to evidence of unequal or different impacts based on gender, race, SES, age, sexual orientation, family structure, or other relevant family demographics. This section should be at least one-half page in length and should include in-text citations for the source content.
  3. This section will be no more than one paragraph and should include a brief description of the policy and its purpose along with appropriate APA citations back to the relevant source material.

Evaluation of impact – “Did the fix work?” Students will digest information from provided sources and relevant outside source material and prepare a brief (approx. one-half page) summary of the impact the identified policy has had on the focal family issue. Citing relevant sources, using APA, the students will describe how the policy has or has not impacted the family issue (the policy’s intended consequences) as well as any unintended consequences that may have resulted from the policy’s implementation. As with the above sections, this portion should be primarily informed by research and should contain APA in-text citations for used source material.
  5. Personal reaction – “How do I feel about it?” Having outlined the issue, relevant policy, and its impact, students will conclude their paper with a brief discussion of their own opinions on the issue and policy. Students should describe their opinions in light of the information they included earlier in the paper and should discuss how those opinions were or were not influenced by their research for this paper. As this is entirely based on opinion, there is no right or wrong answer for this section. Instead, points will be based on whether the students clearly articulate their opinion and how they arrived at it.
